Laminate is a multi-layer flooring product with a dense wood-based core, a high-resolution printed image layer that mimics wood or stone, and a protective wear layer on top. It was one of the first affordable alternatives to hardwood and is still popular for homeowners looking for style on a budget. Laminate is best for dry spaces like bedrooms, living rooms, and offices. While some modern laminate options are water-resistant, it is not fully waterproof like luxury vinyl, so it isn’t recommended for bathrooms or basements.
Laminate and luxury vinyl both mimic wood, but they differ in construction and performance. Laminate has a wood-fiber core with a printed top layer, is not fully waterproof (some water-resistant lines exist), and is usually sold by AC wear ratings as a lower-cost option for dry rooms. Luxury vinyl is made from layered plastics, is fully waterproof, and performs better in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and homes with pets or kids while also feeling softer and quieter underfoot.
Laminate is tested for durability using the Abrasion Class (AC) rating system:
AC3 – Suitable for residential use in living rooms and bedrooms.
AC4 – Stronger, often used in busy households and light commercial areas.
AC5 – Built for heavy traffic, commercial spaces, or households that need extra durability.
The higher the AC rating, the better laminate resists scratches, dents, and everyday wear.
Laminate care is simple:
- Sweep or vacuum regularly.
- Damp mop only — avoid standing water.
- Use felt pads under furniture to prevent scratches.
Click-Lock (Floating): Planks or tiles lock together, great for fast installation and easy replacement.
Glue-Down: More permanent, ideal for high-traffic areas or commercial spaces .
Our team recommends the best method depending on the room and subfloor.
Maintaining luxury vinyl is simple. Regular sweeping or vacuuming removes dirt and grit, and occasional mopping keeps floors fresh. Because it’s waterproof, spills and messes are easy to wipe away.
All luxury vinyl products come with manufacturer-backed warranties. Coverage varies by product but typically protects against defects, wear, and water damage for years of confidence.
